Parameter 01 / ECONOMY
DID INDIA BECOME RICHER,
OR JUST BIGGER?
Growth, income, jobs and the distance between the size of an economy and the prosperity of its people.
The government’s case
India moved from the tenth-largest economy to among the top five, kept inflation within band through a global shock cycle, and formalised large parts of a cash-driven system. Digital public infrastructure now moves more real-time payments than any other country, and record capital expenditure has been financed without losing macro stability.
The opposition’s case
Aggregate size is not the same as household prosperity. Per-capita income remains in the lower-middle-income range, private consumption has been uneven, and wage growth for the bottom half has trailed profits. Formal job creation has not kept pace with the number of Indians entering the workforce each year.
